Piano moving cost is not one number you can look up for every Colorado home. A spinet on the first floor of a Denver bungalow is a different job from a grand that has to come down stairs in Boulder or ride to Colorado Springs. Christian Brothers Moving & Storage does not publish a piano rate card. The quote depends on the instrument, the building, the miles, and any special handling the crew has to add.

Request a piano moving quote

National figures are useful only as context. Angi’s 2026 piano moving cost guide puts the national average near $400, with most jobs between $200 and $1,000. A Denver piano shop, Mountain Piano, describes a similar local band of about $200 to $600, and $500 to $2,500 or more once the trip leaves town. Those are other companies’ published ranges, not a Christian Brothers price.

What sets piano moving cost before the truck rolls

Five details do most of the work on a piano quote. Miss one, and the number on the phone will not match the number on moving day.

Cost driver What to tell the mover Why it changes the job
Piano type and weight. Name the upright, spinet, baby grand, or grand. Add the make if you know it. Heavier instruments need more people and a piano board. A furniture dolly is not enough.
Stairs and floor level. Count flights at pickup and at delivery. Say whether an elevator exists. Each flight adds time and padding. It also raises the chance of a slow carry.
Access. Note door widths, tight turns, and the walk from the truck. Include gates and parking. A long carry or a removed door changes crew size. It also changes time on site.
Distance. Give both street addresses. City names alone are not enough. A few miles across town is not an interstate haul. The bill should show which one you mean.
Special handling. Say if legs come off. Mention a skid board, a crate, or a path that will not fit the case. Extra steps are labor and equipment. They are not a free add-on.

Colorado adds a local rule on top of those details. For a move that stays inside the state, the Colorado Public Utilities Commission says a permitted household-goods mover must give you a written estimate and a signed contract. Ask for an in-person look when the piano, the stairs, or the parking are hard to describe on a form.

Piano type changes the crew, not just the label

Type is the first split in piano moving cost because weight and shape decide the crew. Angi’s 2026 table is national. It is not a Colorado tariff. It shows digital pianos around $200 to $350. Spinets and consoles sit around $250 to $450. Uprights run about $300 to $600. Baby grands run about $400 to $800, and grands about $500 to $1,200. Organs sit in a similar band, about $400 to $900.

Weight tells the same story in pounds. Angi groups instruments under 400 pounds with a two-person crew and a lower band. The next steps are 400 to 600 pounds, then 600 to 900. Over 900 pounds, four or more people are common, and the published band reaches about $700 to $1,200. A grand’s legs usually come off. The case then rides on a skid board. That is more setup than sliding an upright on a board, even when the miles are the same.

Our Colorado piano movers treat that disassembly as part of the move when the instrument needs it. Tuning after the move is not part of that service. Neither is restoration, refelting, or a promise that the piano will sound the same the next morning. A piano can go out of tune from the trip itself. Budget a separate technician if you want it voiced after delivery.

Stairs and tight access raise piano moving cost fastest

Stairs are where a “simple local” quote breaks. Angi lists about $40 to $100 per flight as a common stair charge in its 2026 national notes. Gentle Giant’s local piano moving guide describes access difficulty adding roughly $80 to $200 when crews must use stairs and have no elevator. Mountain Piano cites stair or step fees in a $50 to $200 range, again as an industry example, not a Christian Brothers fee.

Count flights at both addresses. A main-floor pickup and a walk-up delivery is two stair problems, not one. An elevator does not always erase the charge. The crew still has to pad the cab, wait for it, and turn the piano in a small box. Measure the landing, not just the stair width. A turn that looks fine in a photo can stop a grand’s tail.

Long carries matter too. Angi flags extra charges once the walk from truck to door runs past about 50 feet. It puts crane lifts or window removals in a wide $200 to $1,000 band. Those are last-resort paths when a case will not fit the door. Say so before quote day if a previous mover already told you the front door will not work. HOA rules, alley gates, parking bans, and truck-size limits belong in the quote request. The crew still needs a legal place to stop.

Distance is a different bill inside Colorado and beyond it

A ten-mile move across Denver is mostly labor, load time, and a short drive. A run from Fort Collins to Colorado Springs adds hours on the road and a tighter delivery window. Leaving Colorado is a third kind of job. Mountain Piano’s Colorado guide puts many long-distance piano moves at $500 to $2,500 or more. Angi cites about $1.50 to $3 per mile as a common long-distance add-on. Both are published industry figures. Your written estimate is the only number that applies to your addresses.

Interstate household-goods moves also sit under federal rules, not the Colorado PUC permit. Federal law expects a written estimate for interstate household goods, and you can read the consumer guide on FMCSA’s Protect Your Move site. If the rest of the house is moving too, ask whether the piano rides with the household shipment or as its own stop. Combining them can change both the timing and the paperwork. Our note on how to avoid surprise interstate charges covers the household side of that question.

Give both street addresses, not “near Boulder” and “south Denver.” Drive time includes the leg from the crew’s start point, not only the miles between homes. A same-day or after-hours request is its own constraint. We do not publish a piano surcharge schedule for nights or weekends. So ask for that in the quote instead of assuming it is free or assuming a fixed add-on.

A local Front Range job is not the same bill as leaving Colorado

People often ask for one piano moving cost and then describe two different trips. A local move keeps the piano inside the Front Range for a few hours. An interstate move puts it on a longer timeline, with a written estimate that has to survive a state line. Treat them as separate questions when you call.

On a local job, time on the stairs usually costs more than fuel. A first-floor upright going from Englewood to Lakewood can be a short crew day. The same upright carried down a walk-up in Fort Collins and up another in Loveland is still local, and it is still a harder job. Name the cities, then add the floor and the parking. City names alone do not set the price.

Out of state, the piano may travel with the rest of the household or as its own shipment. Ask which one the estimate assumes. A combined load can save a second trip. It can also mean the piano waits on the household delivery window. If you need the piano on a specific day and the furniture a week later, say that before anyone reserves a truck. Colorado PUC rules stop at the state line. Interstate household goods follow the federal guide linked above.

One more split is a piano-only stop versus a full household move. Our local moving service covers homes and apartments. Ask whether the piano will be included in a full-home move or scheduled as its own appointment. The estimate should name which one you are buying. A piano-only crew is not automatically cheaper. A full-home crew is not automatically the right tool if the only fragile piece is the instrument.

Special handling is labor you can see on the estimate.

Special handling is any step beyond “pad it and roll it.” For many grands, that starts with taking the legs and lyre off, covering the key bed, and strapping the case to a board. Uprights are simpler, but they are still tall, tippy, and easy to scar. Blankets and straps are normal protection. A custom wooden crate is not. Angi puts custom crating in a national range of about $200 to $600 when a high-value or antique piano needs a box built around it. If you are shipping the piano rather than riding it on our truck, ask about crating for fragile or odd-shaped pieces as a separate line.

Storage is separate again. If the new house is not ready, the piano may need a holding place. We describe climate-controlled storage for belongings that should not sit in a hot or damp unit, and the climate-controlled versus standard storage guide explains which items belong where. There is no public piano storage rate. The quote should say whether storage is in scope, for how long, and who is responsible while it sits.

Protection language needs the same plain reading. Basic carrier liability and optional valuation are not the same as a cash promise, and they are not the move price. Ask what the written estimate says you are covered for, and what you would have to buy if you want more. We explain the pads, wraps, and straps used on moves in how we protect belongings on every move. That article is about method. It is not a price list.

What to send so the quote matches the stairs

A useful piano quote starts with facts, not a guessed dollar amount. Use this list when you call or write.

  1. Piano type, and the brand or model if it is on the fallboard.
  2. Pickup and delivery addresses, including unit numbers and floor level.
  3. Stairs at each end, and whether an elevator is large enough for the case.
  4. Tight doors, long carries, parking limits, or a path that failed before.
  5. Whether legs must come off, and whether you also need a crate or storage.
  6. The date you want, and whether the rest of the household is moving that day.
  7. Any building rule, COI request, or reservation the crew must meet.

Photos of the piano, the stair turn, and the parking spot save a second visit. If the layout is unusual, ask for someone to look in person before you treat the estimate as final. For moves that stay in Colorado, that written estimate and the contract are what the PUC expects you to have before the truck is loaded.

Contact the Denver office to schedule a piano quote. Fort Collins and Colorado Springs each have their own contact page, so use the office that matches the move.

Frequently asked questions

What would it cost to move a piano in Colorado?

There is no single Colorado price. National guides put most professional piano moves around $200 to $1,000, with a rough average near $400. Your number moves with type, stairs, access, and miles. Christian Brothers quotes the job in writing instead of posting a rate card.

Are upright pianos hard to move?

They are easier than a grand, not easy. An upright is still heavy, tall, and finished on every side that can hit a rail. It usually needs a board, straps, and at least two trained people. Stairs and narrow turns are what make an upright expensive, not the name on the fallboard.

How much more do stairs add?

Published industry examples often add on the order of $40 to $200 when a crew carries a piano on stairs. The amount depends on who wrote the guide and how hard the flight is. That is not our fee schedule. Tell us the number of flights at both addresses so the estimate includes them.

Does piano moving include tuning?

Not necessarily. Moving can disturb tuning, so ask whether a separate tuner is needed after the piano settles. Confirm in writing what the estimate includes. Disassembly for the move, when the piano needs it, is a handling step. It is not a restoration or a promise to refelt or rebuild the instrument.

Who do I call for a written piano quote?

Start with the piano moving service page or the Denver contact page if that is your market. Have the piano type, both addresses, and the stair count ready. You will get a move-specific estimate, not a price copied from a national average.
